Galentine’s Day and Valentine’s Day

It was an awfully busy week with Galentine’s Day and Valentine’s Day.   One of these holidays involved exchanging gifts with a three course meal at a fancy restaurant and the other one was Valentine’s Day.

I have yet to watch Parks and Recreation (though it perpetually lives towards the beginning of my Netflix queue), but I understand the show officially launched Galentine’s Day, as a holiday for ladies to celebrate with ladies.  One night lask week, I met up with a wonderful group of gals for a great dinner (it started with fried cheese and ended with a giant bowl of chocolate mousse…nuff said). We also exchanged gifts such as: socks that said “smitten kitten,” owl themed chocolates, and sparkly stickers.  It was an evening that embodied true love.

Meet the Parents

I have been awfully busy lately with work, Him #2, and interviewing for new jobs.  Job interviews are an awful lot like first dates, which for me means that I try to limit my awkward levels to a socially acceptable degree and generally leave feeling it went ok, only to be ghosted or rejected by impersonal electronic communication.    OH WELL!   I’m in the process of setting up another one this week, so fingers crossed!

Anyways, I unexpectedly met the parents of Him #2 this weekend, but in order to set the scene properly, we have to go way back in time to high school.  I promise this is relevant.

Trouble in Paradise?

Things with Him #2 are generally great–we’re still in the easy and fun puppy dog state and we have really great conversations.  We also have a great ability to talk about something serious and, on a whim, transition to something goofy and fun.  We’ve been spending a lot of time together and we’re even planning to go away together for a weekend in the next few weeks.

For the first time in basically ever, I will have Valentine!

But there is one big recurring issue–he talks about his ex wayyyyy too often.  I believe they broke up 2-3 years ago and he assures me that he is over her, but I assure you that he is not 100% over her.

Date Two: The Final Frontier

Captain’s Log:   After the first date, I had agreed to make some tentative plan for Friday night with the Nerd.   I made this commitment when I still wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but as the week progressed, I was starting to lose hope.

First he told me that he was cleaning his computer.  I thought well I actually need to do that too–my local saved files on my work computer are a mess.  Then he sent me a picture of computer parts and I realized he meant he was taking it apart and cleaning the inside….  He proceeded to tell me how nostalgic it was to look at when he added certain parts…. Several hours later I got a picture of it put back together…

At any rate, by the end of the week, I started to dread the tentative date and I lost hope that he had just been nervous.  I figured I had to eat dinner on Friday anyways, so I kept the date.

The Nerd: Date One

First of all:  Don’t get me wrong–I have a lot of nerdy friends and family.  I consider myself to be slightly nerdy–I have been to the new Star Wars film, watched LORT many of times and read enjoy a good sci-fi novel. So I mean the nickname lovingly. I’m not opposed at all to nerds, but I’m not an uber-nerd.  I don’t play video games, do cosplay, come up with fan theories, or have any memorabilia.  Though I do have a crazy cat lady action figure…..

Anyways, I started talking to the Nerd because he seemed down to earth and was interested in ballroom dancing.  I have fallen so in love with my dance fitness class at the gym that I will reschedule conference calls so that I don’t miss it.  (I have an “appointment” at that time.  Can do earlier or later?)  So, I thought we might have enough in common.

It became clear to me early in the conversation that he was, in fact, quite nerdy.  He apparently spends a lot of his free time building tiny models of the Star Trek ships. (I’m sure they are very specific versions of Star Trek ships, but that’s all I got).  Interesting… everyone needs a hobby…  He wasn’t a huge fan of the new Star Wars movie because it doesn’t follow the stories in the 50 Star Wars books that he has read.  To that point in my life, I had no idea there were Star Wars books.

When we got around to discussing first dates, he said he wanted to do something active because he prefers to have fun instead of sitting and talking over a meal.   I usually prefer a short first date (to make sure I can spend more than an hour with the guy before committing to spend more than an hour with said guy), but hey,  that seemed refreshing and different, so sure!    He suggested ice skating.  I have never ice skated, so I was kinda terrified actually.   But, I was confident that I could look just about this lovable while trying to skate:
